Robert Violante, a cherished high school football and track coach from Bergenfield High School in New Jersey, was one of four people killed in a tragic crash on the Taconic State Parkway on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
New York State Police say a southbound Sprinter van crossed the median near mile marker 9.2 in New Castle, NY, and slammed into a northbound Honda sedan. The van overturned and burst into flames. Three passengers in the van died at the scene. The Honda driver — now identified as Coach Violante — was pronounced dead at the hospital. The van’s driver remains in critical condition.
Coach Violante, remembered as a “gentle giant” and devoted mentor, leaves behind a grieving school and local sports community. According to People, a school official notes that “His unexpected loss is deeply felt across our entire school community.”
