A 26-year-old motorcyclist was killed Easter morning in a fatal motorcycle accident on Nicolls Road, just outside Stony Brook University Hospital.
Police say Airton Santos-Alexandre, of Medford, was riding a 2015 Suzuki GSX-R750 southbound when he lost control of the bike around 11:10 a.m. He struck a guardrail on the right shoulder, and the impact ejected him. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Suffolk County Police and university officers responded quickly and closed the road for several hours. The motorcycle has been impounded for a safety check. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
This tragic incident adds to a deadly weekend on Long Island roads, which also included a hit-and-run in Port Jefferson Station this morning and several other serious accidents. Crashes like these remind us how vulnerable riders can be when motorcycle traffic spikes during warmer months.
Our hearts go out to the loved ones of Mr. Santos-Alexandre.
